The oldest posts Google has are from the 4th of November, but a couple of them are [http://groups.google.ca/group/alt.gothic/browse_thread/thread/bd6252d6335bad47/6620c7abf161245f?hl=en&lnk=st&q=group%3Aalt.gothic#6620c7abf161245f responses] to what appear to be posts on the 2nd.
 
The charter & request to create a.g was [http://groups.google.ca/group/alt.config/browse_thread/thread/f7bab753bda47b39/fbdef2a63ac063ec?hl=en&lnk=gst&q=alt.gothic#fbdef2a63ac063ec posted to alt.config] by [http://groups.google.ca/groups/profile?hl=en&enc_user=9KTbihkAAABOX7GQyKqiOn3mzsZ175scVfbiFziOdjG8sOcaNavG3A Eldritch the thrillseeker], who posted out of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on 30 October 1991. 

The first [http://groups.google.ca/group/alt.gothic/browse_frm/thread/2a88e37af4989f4?hl=en&tvc=1&q=group%3Aalt.gothic  "Is x gothic?"] post was on 03 November 1991. In this case x = Fields of the Nephilim, and someone asked in a non-troll like fashion if SoM were Goth.
